The svg Element

An SVG document fragment consists of an svg element and all its content. When the SVG document fragment exists as a standalone file, it is termed an SVG document. An SVG document fragment can be embedded in an SVG document or can be embedded in a document from another XML application language—for example, an XSL-FO (Extensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects) document.

An SVG document fragment need not have any content (but, of course, in that situation there is nothing to render other than a blank SVG viewport) or can contain a complex, deeply nested hierarchy of elements, for example, describing static SVG graphics shapes, SVG animation elements, and scripting code.
