Hour 4. Working with Bitmap Images > Using the Layers Panel

Using the Layers Panel

Fireworks, like many other graphics applications, uses layers to help you manage objects in an image. Layers are like transparent sheets; you can draw on individual sheets and then change how they’re stacked, in order to change which elements are in the background and which are in the foreground. In this case, the Canvas is the surface you layer the sheets on.

You can work with layers through the Layers panel (see Figure 4.7). Bitmap editing is considered destructive; when you change a pixel, any information that was previously there is lost. This is why it’s so important to back up your source images. By using layers and bitmap objects, you can break your bitmaps into discrete parts, so you can preserve and compare your editing decisions nondestructively.
