Workshop

In this hour you have looked at many of the tools and options that really highlight the power of the Fireworks application. Use the questions and quiz below to review your learning and test how much you remember about fills and stroke effects. The exercises at the very end will help you put some of these techniques into practice.

Q&A

Q1:I’ve applied a grayscale gradient fill to a path and pasted it as a mask. Why isn’t the result a gradual transparency?
A1: Select the mask by clicking on its thumbnail next to the masked object in the Layers panel. In the Property Inspector make sure the Grayscale Appearance button is checked and that the fill color swatch shows the gradient fill. Vector masks default to the Path Outlines setting.
Q2:I created a Fireworks PNG graphic with vectors to use as a pattern. When I scale the pattern with the pattern fill handles, why am I getting jagged bitmap edges?
A2: Even if the graphics in a Fireworks PNG file are vector paths, they will be treated as bitmaps when used as a pattern or texture. Scaling the patterned or textured object will scale these bitmaps along with them, potentially creating jaggies when the bitmaps are resampled.
Q3:I’m trying to create a stroke with flow so that more ink is applied as I hold the cursor over a point. Why aren’t the spacing and flow properties available to me in the Edit Stroke dialog?
A3: Some of the preset strokes do not allow for spacing and flow properties. If you want to use these properties, choose an Air Brush stroke as the starting point for your custom stroke.
