Exercises

These optional exercises are designed for practice with combinations of the techniques you have covered in this hour.

  1. Practice creating masks and mask effects. Create a photographic montage using masks of different shapes. The path of a vector mask object crops or clips the underlying objects to the shape of its path, creating a shaped effect. When working with multiple images, you can create interesting and effective displays.

  2. Use the shape skills you have just covered to create complex paths manually. You can turn a circle into a square by the addition and movement of points, although this is not easy. Practice the different path-joining techniques to better understand how they work and their relative strengths. Punching and combining paths accurately will give you limitless options in your design work.

  3. Create a complex path object and then use the Simplify command to remove some of the points. As mentioned in the text, you need to be careful not to remove too many points, or you will adversely affect the intended object. Again, trial and error is a good way to come to grips with the best methods to apply to different objects.
