Hour 9. Tools and Techniques for Layout ... > Using Rules, the Grid, and Alignment

Using Rules, the Grid, and Alignment

Once you begin adding elements to a design or layout, things can start to get pretty cluttered. Eventually, you are going to want everything neatly placed on the canvas. This is where layout guides can come in very handy.

Placing Guides with the Rulers

To begin placing vertical or horizontal guides, select Rulers from the View menu, or press Control+Alt+R (Windows) or Command+Option+R (Macintosh). This will toggle the rulers in the workspace. The ruler units default to pixels. With the rulers visible, click the top ruler and drag it into the canvas to place a horizontal guide. Click the left ruler and drag it over the canvas to place a vertical guide, as shown in Figure 9.18. Click the guide and drag it to reposition it. Double-click the guide to enter a numerical value for the position.
