Workshop

In this hour you have learned about slicing layouts in preparation for use on the Web as well as techniques for changing and formatting sliced layouts. Use this final part of the hour to review these skills and topics.

Q&A

Q1:What is an HTML table, and why should I care?
A1: HTML, the standard for coding Web pages, was originally devised as a format for storing text documents like research papers. Tables were meant to lay out numbers, but they also worked for images and became a means for creating advanced graphic layouts for the Web. Fireworks was originally created to help designers and developers create HTML tables with images more quickly and easily.
Q2:How can I use slices to reduce the file size and increase the quality of an exported layout?
A2: Slices can separate text and line art from photographs so that different types of compression can be applied to different areas of an image. Slices are not limited to the Web standards GIF and JPEG—slices can be optimized for any format, including PNG, TIF, and BMP.
Q3:How are Alt image descriptions displayed in a Web browser?
A3: Alt tags are displayed differently in different browsers. Internet Explorer displaysAlt tags when a user mouses over an image with an Alt description. Text browsers, such as Lynx for UNIX, display Alt tags as links to the image file so that the user can choose to download the image described or follow the link from the image. Some browsers read page text to the user through text-to-speech conversion; such a browser will read the alternate description for each image as it progresses through the page. The Alt tags for images in a Web page are ordered on the page from left to right and then from top to bottom.
