Workshop

In this hour you have been introduced to the basic concepts of creating Web animations in Fireworks. For a single hour you have covered a large amount of information, so use this final section to review what you have learned. The exercises at the very end will give you the opportunity to practice these new techniques.

Q&A

Q1:I’m not any good at drawing, so why should I bother with a storyboard?
A1: Even if you’re no Da Vinci, you should still take the time to sketch out an idea. This may mean just sketching three or four still frames or drawing some text with an arrow pointing the way you want it to move. You also can try combinations and sequences of images very quickly with notecards. Especially when working with other people, such experimenting with changes can take time, so it’s better to know what you want to accomplish before you set out.
Q2:I’m navigating from frame to frame, moving an object on a shared layer a little bit each time. Why isn’t it animated when I click the play button in the workspace?
A2: When a layer is shared, you can edit the objects on that layer from any frame, but the change will affect that layer for all frames. You want to create an unshared layer and place a copy of the object you want to animate on that layer in each frame.
Q3:When I create a symbol from a path or bitmap object, how come I can’t edit the individual objects with the Subselection tool?
A3: A symbol is a graphic that’s meant to be repeated over and over again with slight variations. When something has been converted into a symbol, you must edit the symbol through the Symbol Editor dialog. You can bring this up by double-clicking the symbol on the Canvas. If you edit one copy of the symbol by using the Symbol Editor, though, all the copies of that symbol will be changed as well. You may use Break Apart from the Symbol commands on the Modify menu if you want to remove the objects from that symbol instance.
