Hour 11. Planning and Creating Animation... > Converting Objects into Symbols

Converting Objects into Symbols

An important feature of Fireworks is its ability to convert graphic objects into symbols. Any object in Fireworks can be converted into a bitmap, path, text, or group. Symbol objects are like groups but have special features, such as the capability to edit instances of the symbol individually or universally and to apply behaviors (such as button interaction or animation) to them. When one or more objects are converted into a symbol object, a new item is created in the Library panel, so you can simply drag and drop symbols from the Library onto the Canvas.

There are three types of symbols—graphic symbols, animation symbols, and button symbols. In this hour you’ll use graphic and animation symbols to create some simple animations. For more information on button symbols, the Symbol Editor, the Library panel, and editing symbol instances, refer to Hour 15, “Creating Interactive Graphics.” For now you’ll be using the familiar menus and the Layers, Frames, and Properties (Property Inspector) panels to work with symbols.
