Workshop

The following questions will test your knowledge of image formats, document settings, and other topics discussed in this hour. Answers are provided for your reference.

Q&A

Q1:I opened a JPEG image, so why couldn ’t I save it as a.jpg file?
A1: The Fireworks Save, Save As, and Save a Copy commands will save your work only in the Fireworks PNG format. When you opened the JPEG image, Fireworks created a new, unsaved PNG image. This way the JPEG data source is left untouched. Saving creates a working image, and if you’re working in Fireworks, this will be a PNG image. You have to export your PNG image to create a JPEG image as your final output.
Q2:My scanner is connected to my computer, but I can ’t use Scan on the File menu. What ’s wrong?
A2: Fireworks can use only scanners that support the TWAIN protocol. There are hundreds of different scanners from dozens of manufacturers, and each may be installed on different types of hardware with drivers for different operating systems. Check with your scanner manufacturer to find the necessary drivers for your system. If you cannot configure TWAIN support for your scanner, you may be able to use the manufacturer’s scanning software to scan images and save them to your hard drive outside of Fireworks.
Q3:I grabbed a still of Jimi Hendrix from a documentary, added a lot of crazy effects, and turned it into a tiny logo. Is that illegal?
A3: You’ve broken a lot of laws here. Every frame of the documentary is protected by modification and distribution copyrights, as well as by the reuse rights of any talent or crew who participated in the production. Jimi Hendrix’s estate has the right of publicity to protect his likeness from unauthorized commercial use. By using this image as a logo, you are creating an illegal trademark that implies the production or endorsement of your products by Jimi Hendrix. Needless to say, you’ll be lucky if you reach a settlement.
