Exercises

These optional exercises are tailored for you to hone the skills and techniques covered in this hour.

  1. Rather than work with the supplied images, locate a photograph of a person or animal to work with. Use the tools covered in this hour to remove the background from the photograph. You will be left with a single bitmap object that can then have a new background applied or even be cut and pasted into a new document.

  2. As covered in this hour, effects can only be applied to complete bitmap objects, but did you know that you can work around this? Suppose you want to add an effect to only part of a photograph. Try this: Draw a bitmap over an area of a bitmap to be affected, then choose Cut, followed by Paste. This applies an exact copy of the cut pixels in the same location but as a new bitmap. You can now play with the effects only on the new object

  3. Did you know that you can convert bitmaps to line drawings in Fireworks, as well? Open a photograph or other bitmap, then from the Effects menu in the Property Inspector, choose Other, Find Edges. See how the outlines in the object are traced.
