Workshop

This final section of the hour is designed to help you remember the topics covered, the tools and techniques. The optional exercises will help you put this hour’s learning into practice.

Q&A

Q1:I want to draw or paint into a new bitmap object over an existing bitmap object, but my brush is painting into the original object instead. How can I keep from altering the original object?
A1: If you begin drawing on the Canvas with a bitmap tool by clicking an existing bitmap object, the changes will be made to that object. You can create a new object by clicking the New Bitmap Object button on the Layers panel or creating a new layer and locking the layer with the bitmap object you want to preserve.
Q2:I scaled a bitmap object to make it smaller. Now I want it larger. Why doesn’t it look as good as it did originally?
A2: When you use the Pointer tool or transform an object, the object’s pixels are resampled, creating a new, smaller bitmap image with fewer total pixels. If you make this object larger again, it will resample the smaller image to make it bigger, approximating the picture from the new, smaller bitmap instead of the original. This is why it’s important to keep copies of your files and, within a Fireworks PNG source graphic, copies of your original bitmap objects, as well.
Q3:When I try to use the Marquee tool, why does it always create the same size or shape of marquee?
A3: Make sure that the Normal style is chosen for the Marquee tool in the Property Inspector. The Fixed Size style will let you create a marquee of the specified size only. The Fixed Ratio style constrains the proportions to those specified.
