Area Selection Tools

One of the keys to successful graphic design is the ability to focus on critical visual details. One of the most common ways to cut down on visual clutter is to remove or sublimate the unimportant parts of an image. The area selection tools select an area of pixels in a bitmap to be cut or copied and also help define areas on the image that you would like to edit, while preventing other areas from being changed.

First you need to learn about some of the critical tools and their options; then you can start using them on some real photos. These tools include the Pointer and Crop tools in the Select group and the Marquee, Lasso, and Magic Wand tools in the Bitmap group on the Tools panel, shown in Figure 5.1.
