Exercises

Using text on the Internet to avoid the problems of restrictive fonts is a really common technique. In this hour you have looked at ways of making text work the way you want. These little exercises will test your understanding of text in Fireworks.

  1. Create a star shape by using the drawing tools you learned about in Hour 7, “Working with Vector Paths.” Then use this shape as a path for text, maybe a celebrity’s name following the line segments. Once the text is on the basic path, adjust the leading, kerning, and font size to fit the shape exactly.

  2. Import some text from a word processor, then choose key words to create headings for a Web page. This will sharpen your ability to remove words, create new text objects, and reformat existing text to suit your needs.

  3. Create a greeting card. Start with a graphic that you wish to use, maybe even a photo of the recipient, and then add text for the greeting message. Remember that you must consider size and color when placing text onto existing colors. Make some of the text vertical, or create a balloon shape to hold a personal greeting, sized and shaped to fit.
