Workshop

You should now be able to create whatever kind of interactive and behavior-driven links you want within your image files, from simply using the URLs and creating basic hyperlinks, to having fully developed navigation bars popping up whenever triggered. This final section will test your memory and give you ideas for tasks that will utilize the skills from this hour.

Q&A

Q1:I just created a slice with a link, and I want the image underneath the slice to change when the user moves the mouse over it. What’s the fastest way to do this?
A1: Select the slice with the Pointer tool and then click the behavior handle in the center. Select Simple Rollover from the pop-up menu and choose what you want the image to change to—the same area of the Canvas on another frame or an image from another document.
Q2:How do I change the Active Area for a Button symbol? When I click the slice with the pointer, nothing happens.
A2: Underneath the Active Area tab in the Symbol Editor window for a Button symbol is a Set Active Area Automatically check box. Uncheck this box and then click the active area slice to bring up the slice handles and change the size or position of the active area.
Q3:I placed multiple instances of a symbol on the Canvas. When I double-clicked on one to edit it, they all changed. How do I edit just that symbol instance?
A3: You can apply transformations, effects, opacity, and Blending modes to symbols through the Property Inspector. These are instance-level settings, so they won’t affect the appearance of other instances of the same symbol. Double-clicking a symbol instance brings up the Symbol Editor, where changes are made at symbol level, which means they will be reflected in all instances of that symbol. You can also choose Break Apart from the Symbol commands on the Modify menu to remove the objects from a symbol instance, but any connection to the symbol in the Library panel will also be removed.
