Workshop

In this hour you have looked at saving information from the History Panel, saving Commands and opening them into a text editor, as well as looking at batch processing in detail. This was quite a lot for a single hour, so use this final section to review your learning. The optional exercises, to complete on your own time, are designed to reinforce the topics you covered in this hour.

Q&A

Q1:Why can’t I save all my steps as a single command? The separator line is always in the way!
A1: The separator line is perhaps the most significant problem that people come across when creating commands with the History panel. The separator line appears every time you change your selection. Every time you try to perform an action, Fireworks checks to see what is selected and splits areas that cannot be applied to different objects. You cannot apply text formatting to an ellipse, for example, so plan your steps carefully.
Q2:I want to create a complicated command, but the History panel shows only 20 steps. What do I do?
A2: Use the Fireworks Preferences panel to change this setting. The default is 20 steps, but you can increase this to meet your needs. Before rushing to make the change, see whether with a little planning you can reduce the number of steps you need to save.
Q3:I ran a batch process on some files, but the result was not what I expected. Why?
A3: It is most likely that you chose your options in the wrong order. Remember that the order in which the options are listed is also the order in which they are applied. This can cause very strange effects, especially if you are changing colors or adding custom commands.
