Sharing Customized Fireworks Configurations

Another way to make your work go faster is to customize Fireworks to fit your workflow better. For instance, you can add your own image files to the default pattern and texture sets, so that you can use them for any document. You can also create your own symbol libraries and save them for selection from the libraries available in the Edit menu. Custom elements can be configured for the master application or for individual users. And because almost every custom element for Fireworks—including images for patterns, symbol libraries, scripts, compression presets, and palettes—is available as a discrete file on your hard drive, customizing the application for any or all of the users is as easy as copying and pasting files and folders by using your operating system’s File Management application.

To locate the master configuration files for Fireworks that affect all users, navigate to the folder that contains the Fireworks application. In Windows XP this is usually Program Files\Macromedia\Fireworks MX. For Macintosh OS X users, the files are saved under the Applications\Macromedia Fireworks MX\ folder. Inside the Configuration folder, shown in Figure 18.11, are all the customizable folders for the Fireworks application. Changes to these folders will affect all users on that system. For instance, if you copy an image file into the Configuration\Patterns folder, the image file will be available from the list of patterns on the Fill Options menu when the Pattern fill type is selected.
