Hour 12. Using Masks > Layer Masks

Layer Masks

Layer masks enable you to hide and reveal parts of layers, as well as to apply special effects, such as filters, in a controlled and precise manner. Layer masks, like Quick Masks, can be edited. One advantage of applying effects to a layer mask is that, if you don't like the result, you have only to discard the mask, and your image is left untouched. If you like what you see, apply the mask to make the changes.

Layer masks are raster (bitmap) images. They are altered with Painting tools. There's also a kind of mask called a vector mask, or layer clipping path. Instead of painting the mask on the screen, you draw its boundaries with the Path tools. You'll learn more about those in the next hour.
