Q&A

Q1:Are there elements, attributes, or properties that cannot be animated?
A1: Certainly. Time, for instance, cannot be changed; for example, you cannot animate the duration of another animation. Chapter 19.2.15 of the SVG Recommendation (http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/) gives a list of items that can be animated. Also, for each item listed, the recommendation states clearly whether it can be animated or not. If you become frustrated with an animation, be sure to check the recommendation to see whether your animation is indeed possible. Also, check the release notes of the SVG viewer you are using to make sure it can handle such animation at its present version.
Q2:My animation is playing back choppily. What's wrong with my code?
A2: The SVG viewers currently available to the public are not fully optimized for performance comparable to Flash animation. Although this can be frustrating initially, keep in mind that this performance bottleneck will be overcome soon. Adobe's SVG Viewer, for instance, has seen tremendous improvements in speed with each release. Also, Hour 24 covers some common problems and provides suggestions for making your code perform well in today's situations.
