Hour 12. Using Masks > Layer Masks

Layer Masks

Layer masks enable you to hide and reveal parts of layers, as well as to apply special effects, such as filters, in a controlled and precise manner. Layer masks, like Quick Masks, can be edited.

To make a Layer mask, select an area of the image to mask and click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layer palette to make a new layer. Then click the Layer Mask icon (the leftmost icon at the bottom of the Layers window) to make the new layer into a mask. When you do, you see a Layer mask thumbnail next to the image thumbnail. Figure 12.6 shows an example. Black indicates the portions of the layer that are covered and white shows the parts that are revealed. If the mask is made to be semi-transparent, the partially masked areas would be shown in gray.
