Chapter Twelve. Layers > Shape Layers

Shape Layers

Q1:What is a Shape layer?
A1: A Shape layer is created when you use a Shape tool (Rectangle, Polygon, etc.) and in the Options Bar the tool is set to create Shape layers. A new layer is created that consists of a color layer and vector shape mask. You can edit the color and/or edit the shape.
Q2:Why don't I get a new Shape layer? I would get a new Shape layer every time I used the Shape tools, but now I don't. Why?

A2: With a Shape tool active, look in the Options Bar. There are three small icons that control how the Shape tools work. The first icon will create a new Shape layer each time, the second icon will create a new work path, and the third icon creates a pixel-filled region. If you always want a new Shape layer, make sure the first icon is selected.
Q3:How do I change the color of a Shape layer?
A3: Choose the color you want to use in the Foreground color swatch, make sure the Shape layer is selected (active) in the Layers palette, then press Option-Delete (PC: Alt-Backspace) to fill it with that color. You can also double-click on the layer thumbnail that appears to the left of the vector mask in the Layers palette and choose your color in the resulting Color Picker.
Q4:Can I edit the shape of the Shape layer?
A4: Yes, use the Direct Selection tool (Shift-A) to edit the paths that make up the Shape layer.
