Section: TWO Frequently Asked Questions

Section TWO: Frequently Asked Questions

Apparently there are only two categories of questions in Photoshop: quick questions and dumb questions. That has become obvious to me over the years I've been teaching—about 98% of the time, people preface their question with either “I just have a quick question” or “this is probably a dumb question.”

Luckily, there are also only two answers to every Photoshop question: “theoretically” and “it depends.”

Here's the deal about the “quick question” thing: It's not the length of the question that's the issue, it's the length of the answer! The goal in this Q&A section is to be the best of both worlds: quick questions with equally quick answers. I'm not trying to provide deep technical explanations, but enough of an answer to help solve your problem—if you choose to dig up additional technical information from Photoshop Help or some other source, go for it!

Now, let's address the whole stupid/dumb/silly question issue. I've always said (and I really believe) that there's no such thing as a dumb question. Okay, there is one exception: If you ask the exact same question three times in a row, that might be bordering on dumb. Think about it, though. If you don't know how to do something, how is that dumb? Many people I meet are, for the most part, self-taught in using Photoshop. As I always like to say, the problem with being self-taught is…the teacher. Think about it: How can you teach yourself something you know nothing about? When we say we're self-taught, what we really mean is “I discovered a method that seems to work—it may not be the best method, but I'll keep using it until I discover another way.” So be reassured, go ahead and ask—it's not dumb.

This section contains some of the most frequently asked questions in the world of Photoshop CS2—or, at the very least, a bunch of questions I made up that hopefully someone has asked at some point. Seriously, these questions come from a number of sources: the NAPP discussion forums, the Adobe user forums, the NAPP Help Desk, and questions I've been asked over the years while teaching seminars. Needless to say, it would be impossible to include every conceivable question, but I think you'll find a question that's similar enough to your problem. Now go ahead and ask!
