Chapter 2. Importing and Managing Photos > Important support folders

Important support folders

  • The top-level Albums folder contains folders and data files for each of your albums. The specific album folders contain aliases to the original photos.

  • The top-level iPhoto Selection folder (when present) holds aliases to photos used for your Desktop picture and for the screen saver.

  • The Data folders contain files iPhoto uses to track images; they're unreadable.

  • The Thumbs folders contain the tiny thumbnail images iPhoto displays in the display pane.

  • The Originals folders contain the original image files as soon as you edit their corresponding photos (any edited photos you see in iPhoto are actually copies of the originals).

Old Stuff That Can Go

Although you shouldn't mess with files and folders in the iPhoto Library folder generally, there are a few items you can delete without harm—if they're present—because they're relics from previous versions and are no longer used. You won't save much space, but feel free to trash the Desktop, iDVD, and Screen Effects folders, and the Library.data file. The folders merely contain aliases used by previous versions of iPhoto for your Desktop picture, iDVD, and the Mac OS X screen saver, and the Library.data file was used by iPhoto 1 and iPhoto 2.
