Chapter 4. Editing Photos > To open photos in an external editor

To open photos in an external editor

1.
Select an external editor, but don't set iPhoto to open photos in it by default.

2.
-click one or more photos and choose Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu (Figure 4.54).

Figure 4.54. To edit a photo in an external editor without switching iPhoto's preferences, Control-click the image and choose Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu.

Thumbnail Warning!

Do not choose Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu when you're in edit mode; if you do, the changes you make in the external program won't be reflected in the thumbnail. The easiest way of making the thumbnail update is to make a minor change (like changing the black point to 1%) in iPhoto's edit mode. In short, if you want to use the contextual menu, use it only from organize mode.

✓ Tips

  • Revert to Original works on photos edited in another program as long as you open them from within iPhoto (don't drag to the other application to open).

  • Click the Edit button or -double-click to avoid opening a photo in an external editor when that's the default.
