Chapter 15. Collage > Creating Smart Objects

Creating Smart Objects

There are two main methods for creating a Smart Object. If the layers you'd like to use are contained in the currently active document, just select them and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Group Into New Smart Object. If, on the other hand, the layer or layers are part of an external file, choose File>Place instead. The external file can be in any file format that Photoshop can open. That includes Adobe Illustrator and Camera Raw files. Once you've created a Smart Object, it will appear as a single layer in the Layers palette, and it will display a special icon to indicate that it's a Smart Object (Figure 15.121).

Figure 15.121. The icon in the lower right of the layer thumbnail indicates this is a Smart Object layer.
