Chapter 15. Collage > Converting the Blending Sliders into a Layer Mask

Converting the Blending Sliders into a Layer Mask

Earlier in this chapter, we talked about making areas of a layer transparent using the Blending sliders in the Layer Style dialog box. Occasionally, you might need to turn off the sliders and create a Layer Mask that produces the same result. (Why? Well, you might want to be able to edit the Layer Mask using painting tools and filters instead of just the Blending sliders.) To accomplish this, you'll need to go through a multi-step process.

First, create a new empty layer below the layer that is using the Blending sliders. Next, click the layer above it (the one that uses the Blending sliders) and press Option-Command-E (Mac) or Alt-Ctrl-E (Windows). This deposits information into the layer that does not use the Blending sliders, but produces the same results (permanently deleting the transparent areas).
