Shadows

The Shadows slider is the black clipping control. It behaves very much like the black input slider in Photoshop's Levels command, but its effect tends to be more drastic, simply because it's operating on linear-gamma data, which devotes very few bits to the deepest shadows. As a result, the Shadows control is a bit of a blunt instrument.

Of all the Camera Raw controls, Shadows is the one that most demands caution. Rather than using it to set a black clipping point, I recommend leaving a little headroom, so that you can fine-tune the black point in Photoshop on the gamma-corrected image, where you can operate with a little more finesse.
