Chapter 10. Keeping Your Photos Safe > A Plan to Keep Your Photos Safe

A Plan to Keep Your Photos Safe

The backup and archive functions give you the tools to keep your photos safe—but they won't work without your help. It's important to put together a plan to back up your photos and your catalog on a regular basis so that you don't end up losing precious photos. Most of us intend to back up much more frequently than we actually do—so consider this an exhortation to mend your ways before you lose all those photos.

Making a full system backup on a regular basis, perhaps weekly, is a good idea. But it's also a great deal of trouble unless you invest in a backup device—either a tape drive or an external hard disk—that can store the entire contents of your hard disk. You can reduce the amount of space you need for backup by carefully configuring your backups to skip program files that can be re-created by reinstalling software from the master discs.
