Chapter 10. Keeping Your Photos Safe > Creating Offline Masters

Creating Offline Masters

If you're running out of space on your hard disk, or you have photos on your disk that you don't expect to need for a long time, you can move the master files to a CD or DVD while retaining a proxy—a lower-resolution copy—on your hard disk. Elements will prompt you to insert the disc with the full-resolution master file when you want to view the photo in single-photo view or in review or compare mode, print it, edit it, or make a creation with it.

Tip

Before moving any photos offline, check the proxy setting in Preferences, as discussed in Chapter 2, “Managing Your Files,” to make sure you've chosen the proxy size you want; if you change it later, the change won't affect proxies that have already been created. Use the maximum proxy size unless you're very short on hard disk space.
