Masking-Tape Selections

The key to understanding selections, masks, and channels is to realize that they're all basically the same thing down deep. No matter what kind of selection you make—whether you draw out a rectangular marquee, draw a path with the Lasso, or use the Magic Wand to select a colored area—Photoshop internally sees the selection as a grayscale channel (see Figure 8-1). Note that in this section we're only talking about raster (bitmapped) selections; we'll discuss sharp-edged vector clipping paths and masks in “Paths,” much later in this chapter.
