Contone Output

With binary devices such as platesetters and printers, you need to use a halftone to fool the eye into seeing shades of gray because you can't create color or gray pixels. With a contone device, you can vary the color or gray shade of each pixel. Continuous-tone imaging, usually called contone, is different from halftone imaging in two other ways.

  • The pixels touch each other so that without very close inspection no paper or clear film shows through between marks.

  • Each pixel is a specific color, made by building up varying densities of primary colors in the same spot.
