Sharpening

Nothing will do more for the quality of your line art images than sharpening the grayscale scan (see Figure 12-3). 'Nuf said. We recommend running the Unsharp Mask filter twice with the settings 500/1/5. However, if the second USM makes the image look terrible (it often does if you're scanning poorly printed originals), undo it and stick with just one pass of unsharp masking. By the way, if your scanning software can sharpen, you may be able to save yourself a step, though most scanners' drivers don't do as good a job as Photoshop's Unsharp Mask filter.
