Chapter 5. Color Settings: Configuring Photoshop's Color Settings

Chapter 5. Color Settings: Configuring Photoshop's Color Settings

Welcome to the heart of Real World Photoshop CS. We consider every topic in this book to be important, but when push comes to shove, Photoshop's deepest, darkest secrets lie right here in the Color Settings chapter. Without understanding how Photoshop handles color behind the scenes, there's no way to get great color (or black-and-white) images out of Photoshop. It's dense stuff, but it's worth slogging through. (For maximum benefit, we recommend reading the whole chapter once, and then reading it again.)

Back when Photoshop 5 arrived, we knew its new way of handling color would cause headaches. And it did, so the folks at Adobe made sweeping changes to the way Photoshop 6 handled color. If you're coming from an earlier version than Photoshop 6, be prepared to re-learn a lot. If you're familiar with the way Photoshop 6 or 7 handled color, you'll be glad to know that this time, there are no wrenching paradigm changes. But whether you're a Photoshop newbie or an old pro, be prepared to spend some time in this chapter, 'cause we're going spelunking deep into Photoshop's dark color caverns; without this information, you'll be one lost puppy.
