Chapter 7. Understanding Curves > Input and Output Numbers

Input and Output Numbers

Clicking the Save button brings up a standard Save dialog box, which allows you to save the current settings for future use. The file that's created contains the Input and Output settings for each of the points used on the current curve. To reuse a saved setting, click the Load button.

When you're changing the Input and Output numbers, press the up or down arrow key to change a number by 1, or press Shift–up arrow or Shift–down arrow to change a number by 10.

The Input and Output numbers at the bottom of the Curves dialog box allow you to be very precise when adjusting an image. Input is the shade of gray being changed; Output is what it will become. When the points on the curve appear as hollow squares, the Input and Output numbers relate to your pointer. The Input number tells you which shade of gray is directly below your pointer. The Output number tells you what the shade of gray (height of the bar chart) would be if you moved the curve to the height of your pointer.
