Backgrounds and Textures

Backgrounds and textures might not be something that you'd think you want to spend a lot of time learning about. But if you look around at what's considered “high art” in the world of print, and especially on the web, you'll notice that a skilled hand with backgrounds and textures can make the difference between elegance and clunkiness. In this section I'll show you how to create some background effects that I find interesting, and in the making you should be able to gain the skills you need to create your own elegant inventions. The first ones will be simple black and white textures that can be applied to photographs or colorized using the techniques described in Chapter 17, “Enhancement.”

In general, we'll be starting with some raw material, and then we'll enhance it to turn it into a texture. Most of Photoshop's filters require a detailed image in order to produce a noticeable result, but there is a select group of filters that can create something out of nothing.
