Chapter 14. Sharpening > When to Sharpen an Image

When to Sharpen an Image

Before we get into the process of sharpening, we should talk about a few workflow issues. Sharpening works by exaggerating the differences between objects in your image. It does that by finding the pixels that make up the edge of an object, comparing them, and darkening the darker pixels while lightening the lighter ones (Figures 14.3 and 14.4). That makes it easier to see the detail that was already in your image and effectively sharpens the image.
