Three Varieties of Channels

When working with a 16-bit image in Photoshop CS, each channel can contain up to 32,767 shades of gray.


There are three varieties of channels: color channels, spot channels, and alpha channels (Figure 12.1). They all look about the same, but they perform completely different tasks. However, they do have some things in common: They have the same dimensions as the document that contains them; they can contain up to 256 shades of gray; and Photoshop treats them as if they were individual grayscale documents. Let's take a surface look at them; then we'll explore each one in depth.
