Chapter 12. Channels > Channels Are Worth the Pain!

Channels Are Worth the Pain!

To be fair, I have to tell you that a lot of people who try channels for the first time throw their hands in the air and give up. They convince themselves that they don't really need channels, and they learn how to patch things up in other ways. But I believe that if they really knew what they were missing, they'd take another crack at it.

Let's say you just met a secretary named Minnie. In her office there are two pieces of equipment: an old IBM Selectric typewriter and the best personal computer that money can buy. Whenever Minnie's boss gives her a memo to type, she immediately loads up the Selectric with a fresh piece of paper and starts rat-tatting away. “Minnie,” you ask, “Why don't you use the computer for that?” Minnie just gives you a dirty look over her bifocals. So you try to reason with her: “But, Minnie, what if you make a mistake or the boss changes his mind? Wouldn't it be easier to have that memo stored in your computer?” Minnie lets out a long impatient sigh (the kind that only mothers can do justice to). Then she gives it to you straight: “Look, smarty-pants, maybe it would be easier, maybe it wouldn't, but whichever way you look at it, that thing is just too doggoned hard to learn.” And with that, she swivels around, hunches over her beloved Selectric, and finishes her memo.
