Chapter 4. Editing Photos > Customizing the Toolbar

Customizing the Toolbar

iPhoto lets you customize the set and arrangement of tools in the image-editing toolbar.

To customize the toolbar:

With the image-editing window open, if the toolbar is closed, click the Toolbar button in the extreme upper right of the window to display the toolbar.

Either click the Customize button or, from the Window menu, choose Customize Edit Toolbar to reveal the Customize Toolbar sheet (Figure 4.9).

Figure 4.9. To customize the image-editing window’s toolbar, click the Customize button, and then drag items on to or off of the toolbar.

Drag items to or from the toolbar to customize to your liking.

Click Done to save your changes.

Toolbar customization options:

  • To add an item to the toolbar, drag it from the sheet to the desired location.

  • To remove an item from the toolbar, drag it off the toolbar (where it disappears with a satisfying poof).

  • To move an item on the toolbar, drag it to the new location (other items move out of the way as you drag).

  • To revert to the default set of tools, drag the default set to the toolbar, where it replaces whatever is up there.

  • To change whether the tools display as icons, text, or icons and text, choose the desired option from the Show pop-up menu at the lower left.

  • Hold down and drag an item off the toolbar to remove it even when the Customize Toolbar sheet isn’t showing.

What Are All Those Tools?

Not all the tools you can add are either familiar or explained on the previous page, but in fact these seemingly unfamiliar tools don’t offer any new functionality. Those with aspect ratios for names are shortcuts for choices available in the Constrain pop-up menu. Free is as well; it corresponds with None in the Constrain menu. Separators are purely cosmetic; they help you group similar items on your custom toolbar.
