Lesson 16. Optimizing Web Images > Adding a drop shadow

Adding a drop shadow

The file you’ll be working on is intended to serve as a graphic that users click to open another page on the Web site. You’ll add a drop shadow to the button to make the image appear to float above the background, emphasizing that it is an interactive element of the page.

1.
Choose File > Open, and select the 16Start3.psd file in the Lessons/Lesson16 folder.

2.
If necessary, choose Window > Layers to open the Layers palette, and then select Layer 1, if it is not already selected.

3.
Select the Add A Layer Style button () at the bottom of the Layers palette, and then select Drop Shadow from the pop-up menu.

4.
In the Layer Style dialog box, enter the following values:

  • For Opacity, drag the slider or type 65%.

  • For Distance, drag the slider or type 15 px.

  • For Spread, drag the slider or type 10%.

  • For Size, drag the slider or type 15 px.

5.
Click OK to close the Drop Shadow dialog box.

6.
Choose File > Save.
