Creating and applying a layer mask

In this task, you’ll create a layer mask based on the opacity differences of the gradient fill and then apply your mask to the whale tail. The gradient itself doesn’t play a role in your final image, but you’ll use the mask it can generate and apply it to a different layer.

Before you begin, take a close look at the appearance of the whale-tail image in the image window so that you’ll be able to compare it to the results when you finish.
