The Front End

It could be said that the Web designer bridges the gap between Web technology and the browser. Design restrictions exist due to shortcomings of either the technology or the browsers, and it is the Web designer’s job to resolve these shortcomings. Five years ago, the limitations imposed by browsers, computers in general, and the core Web technology were serious problems. These days, Web designers are lucky in the respect that the technology isn’t the main challenge anymore. The following sections describe some of the technology that you will run into when working on a Web site:


By clicking on the “Open DHTML Timeline Editor” button in GoLive, a timeline appears in which the HTML layers can be animated. To see an example of a DHTML Web site, go to www.vortex4u.com. This site uses DHTML to animate a couple of layers that move across the screen. In the “Show Dates” section, a graphic slides swings left to right in a loop, and on the “Press & Bio” page a butterfly moves randomly across the screen.
