The Interface Blueprint

Before you start designing however, there are a couple of other things to consider, particularly if you work with a team of designers. Andreas Lindström, art director for Qwest, who has created many awardwinning Web sites, came up with the concept of using an Interface Blueprint Layer to avoid the common issue of inconsistencies, which can easily happen when many designers work on a Web site simultaneously. The Interface Blueprint Layer (IBL) is a singlelayered image file that helps deliver a solid, welldesigned interface. This idea is really not new; all newspapers and magazines are designed around an invisible grid system, which is used to ensure that the intended design and layout stay consistent throughout the publication. The Interface Blueprint Layer is simply the adaptation of this to Web design.

Andreas Lindström, art director at Qwest, created the concept of the Interface Blueprint Layer. Here is an example as it was used for the Yonkers.com project.
