Effects and Tricks

Most Web sites use a photocomposition, some solid-colored areas, and maybe some simple effects like a drop shadow or bevel. These effects used to require a good understanding of Photoshop’s Channels and other more advanced features, but since Adobe introduced layer styles, even special effects such as chrome, glass, and plastic are just a couple of clicks away. In this section, I want to show you some popular effects that can be easily modified for your own Web site.

Working With Layer Styles

Adding a layer style is as easy as selecting a layer and choosing a style from the Layer Style pop-up in the lower part of the Layers palette. You can also add a style by choosing Layer > Layer Style. In the left part of the Layer Style dialog box that appears is a list of all the effects that can be used. When you select one of the styles in the list, you’ll see more details about the effect. You can also change the settings of the styles. One big advantage of layer styles is that they aren’t applied permanently—you can modify or remove them at any time. Here’s an example of how to create some beveled buttons using layer effects:
