Foreword

Foreword

A few years ago I made the transition from desktop publishing to Web design without anyone to show me the ropes. Originally, I wrote this book for Photoshop 5.0, and since then, Photoshop has come a long way toward being an indispensable tool. So has this book!

I don’t say this without pride, but over the years, this book has helped thousands of designers make the leap into Web design; from the emails I receive, it seems that many readers like my approach to book writing. This book is broken down into three easy-to-follow parts that will teach you all you need to know and more.

Basics: The first section focuses on Web design— anyone making the leap from desktop publishing should read these chapters. They cover some of the fundamental concepts of Web design.

Photoshop and ImageReady: The second section features the Photoshop commands and techniques that are most important for Web designers to master. It should help Photoshop and ImageReady novices become pros. You’ll also learn about compressing and optimizing image files—one of the most important tasks in Web design. Even pros will find plenty of new information here. I believe that no other book on Photoshop covers this subject in such depth.

HTML Authoring: The last section shows you how to bring Photoshop designs into GoLive to make a fully functioning Web site. These chapters offer tips on how to set up your site more efficiently, which will help even those with prior GoLive experience.

Those who have bought earlier versions of the book will notice that it has undergone a major overhaul. After three editions, it seemed time to create a new look. Hopefully, you’ll agree that the current design tops the one in the previous editions. Although I put a lot of thought into the redesign, the layout is not the only thing that has changed. As well as featuring completely new content in many of the chapters, I’ve included more step-by-step procedures than ever before. Most importantly, I’ve reorganized the content to make it easier to find specific information.

I hope you find this book useful and enjoyable. If you have questions or feedback, contact me at:
