Developing a Design Concept > Design Concepts

Design Concepts

As I said at the beginning of this chapter, Web design is really a combination of conceptual design (information architecture and Web usability) and visual design. After our excursion into conceptual design, it’s about time we talk about some of the specific design concepts and conventions. In the first chapter I already introduced you to some of the design issues and limitations of HTML and Web browsers. All those limitations have an impact on your design, and over the years, designers have come up with some workarounds. Today the Web has some established standards that are widely accepted and used.

In this screenshot the navigational parts are marked with red, the white space with blue and the content with green. You want to be aware of your “screen estate” and how you use it.
