Mini-glossary

Current layer and layer transparency

An image can have just a Background (no layers), or you can add multiple layers to it . Only the layer that is currently highlighted on the Layers palette can be edited. Layers can contain special layer effects; they can be restacked and moved; and they are transparent where there are no pixels, so you can see through a whole stack of them. You can assign image components to separate layers and edit them individually without changing other layers.

Layers are like clear acetate sheets: opaque where there is imagery, transparent where there is no imagery.
