Chapter 13. Gradients

Chapter 13. Gradients

A gradient is a gradual blend between two or more colors, and there are two ways to apply one. One way is to use the Gradient tool to apply a gradient directly to a content layer. This tool is a good choice if you want to custom fit a gradient by hand in a particular area. You could also use the tool to fill a layer mask in a fill or adjustment layer with a gradient to create a gradual masking effect.

A second option is to use a gradient fill layer. A gradient applied using this feature appears in its own layer, with a layer mask that can be used to mask gradient layer pixels. This type of gradient is easier to edit.
