Chapter 18. Filters > Pattern Maker

Pattern Maker

The Pattern Maker filter allows you to generate multiple patterns from imagery on a layer or imagery that has been copied to the Clipboard. Instead of utilizing the imagery exactly, though, Photoshop jumbles pixels slightly in order to create an assortment of different pattern tiles. You can use this feature simply to fill a layer with a pattern once, or you can save your favorite pattern tiles as a pattern preset to use with any tool or command that uses pattern presets, such as Pattern Overlay in Layer Style, the Healing Brush tool, the Pattern Stamp tool, or the Fill command.

The sample to be used for a tile can range from an area just a few pixels square to a whole layer. If the tile is smaller than the layer it’s generated from, it will be repeated in a grid formation. If the tile is the same size as the current layer, just one tile will be used to fill the whole layer.
