Chapter 9. Adjustments > Adjustment basics

Adjustment basics

Here are a few pointers for applying the adjustment commands:

  • For flexibility in editing, use adjustment layers (instructions begin on the following page).

  • To apply any adjustment command to a selected area of a layer rather than to an entire layer, create a selection before you choose the command.

  • To reset the settings in a dialog box, hold down Alt/Option and click Reset.

  • Check Preview in an adjustment dialog box to see how the adjustment will affect the image. CMYK color displays more acccurately with Preview on.

  • To progressively reduce an adjustment command’s effect in increments, use Edit > Fade (Ctrl-Shift-F/Cmd-Shift-F).

  • To reopen a dialog box with its last-used settings rather than the default settings, hold down Alt/Option while choosing the command, or include Alt/Option if you use a shortcut to invoke the command.
