Chapter 1. The Basics > Using the Zoom Tool

Using the Zoom Tool

You can magnify and reduce your view by using the Zoom tool, which is available from the toolbox, or by using keyboard shortcuts. Since you’ll often want to zoom in and out while simultaneously using other tools, you will often find the shortcuts handier and so should become familiar with them. The current level of magnification is shown in the document title bar and also in the status bar at the bottom of the document window (yet another location where you can adjust the magnification, in this case by clicking the value in the status bar and deleting it and then entering a specific zoom percentage of your choice).

To zoom in:

1.
In the toolbox, select the Zoom tool (Figure 1.45); or press Z on the keyboard.

Figure 1.45. The Zoom tool, located near the bottom of the toolbox, resembles a tiny magnifying glass.

The pointer changes to a magnifying glass when you move it into the document window.

2.
Be sure that a plus sign appears in the center of the magnifying glass. If you see a minus sign instead, click the Zoom In button on the options bar (Figure 1.46) to switch the pointer.

3.
Click the area of the image that you want to magnify.

Each time you click, the magnification increases by a factor of two.
